You should be specific on who is the beneficiary for each title because you can decide on multiple beneficiaries for your books. If you want to lay out the rules and regulations for the beneficiary of your books to follow, you should do it now. I suggest as a self-published author, you be specific as possible. It’s as generic as can be, but even that’s better than nothing.
#Death of the author update
Yes, we have to update it, but at least we have one. You can even go to an insurance agency and get one made up. You will want to discuss every aspect of your estate (including your books) with a lawyer BEFORE you die, when you make your will. So, going forward, for YOU as an author, you will want to plan for your death ahead of time. If there is no will, you might have to hire a lawyer to sort through your loved ones assets and figure out the legalities of the estate. That happens to a lot of people, but it doesn’t have to happen to you. If you can’t find a will, that means they didn’t take the time to get one made. When an author dies, the first thing that happens is you look for a will.

Not all authors will take the time to prepare. Not all authors have someone they can leave it to. I decided I was going to take good care of her books.īut not all authors are lucky enough to have good caregivers for their work. But I had to re-think my attitude and do what she wanted. I felt I wasn’t qualified to be in charge of her life’s work. I would have rather had my mom back instead of her books. I was sad at first because I never asked for that. She fought hard to stay in this world, so it’s understandable that the topic of what would happen to her books when she died, never came up.īut that didn’t mean that she didn’t secretly prepare.Īfter her death, I was shocked to find that she had left her books to me. My mother made it through brain cancer, partial blindness, and open heart surgery. I guess it was because she fought so hard to live. Looking back, I don’t know why we didn’t discuss the possibility of her death and what would happen to her books if/when she passed away. It was a privilege to have done that for her. I made her covers, helped her format pages, and ready her work for the publishing world. I helped her self-publish every book along the way, and we shared everything that has to do with writing. She was my writing buddy, and I miss her dearly, especially because of the legacy she left behind – Her Books. I can’t say it was a complete shock because she was 74, and had complicated health issues, but it was still unexpected.
#Death of the author full
My mother, who has nine full length self-published novels, passed away in 2018. It’s not something I like to think about, but as someone who just went through this, there is a lot to consider. That is especially true for the self-published author. So we must be pro-active now while we are still alive.

When that happens, it will be too late to decide the fate of our books. But unless we find the fountain of youth, we will inevitably die. We just keep writing and publishing as if we will live forever. As an author, we don’t often think of what will happen to our work when we die.
